On Wednesday, March 10th from 9:00am to 11:00am, Chanar Goodrich, Service Learning Coordinator from the Layton Campus, will be here at the West Jordan Campus to talk about her upcoming trip to Mongolia (from 3/22 to 4/3, 2010) to help Care 4 Kids Worldwide and the Kids in Mongolia. Chanar is raising funds to help the sewer kids. Care for Kids World wide is a non-profit organization that helps children who don’t have any place to stay. More than 3,000 street children live in the sewers under manhole covers in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
Chanar will be visiting First Station which is a temporary holding place where police officers bring children when they catch them roaming the streets, pocket picking, disturbing public places, etc. Often the police officers cannot locate the children’s’ homes, and sadly the children are back out on the street to fend for themselves. Chanar is going to visit the First Station and after assessing their needs, attempt to provide basic hygiene supplies such as toilet paper, soap, cleaning supplies, deodorant, toothpaste, and toothbrushes etc…

Thank you to everyone who participated yesterday with the Career College Association of Utah Legislative Action Day where we took more than 30 students and employees downtown to the Utah State Capital. The morning’s activities were scheduled to include five guest speakers including the Lieutenant Governor, two state representatives, and two professional lobbyists, and they didn’t disappoint.
At 8:00am, students gathered at the campus for doughnuts and we boarded the bus. When we arrived at the Capital, Jayson Beagley, West Jordan Director of Career Services, took the opportunity to snap some quick photos, and we went into an auditorium which was set up to seat 200 participants. Space filled up quickly. UCC Campuses accounted for more than 25 percent of the showing. Our very own James Cox, President of the CCAU, gave a brief introduction welcoming us to the event, and introduced our first guest speaker, Utah’s Lieutenant Governor, Greg Bell, R- Utah. He gave a brief talk about government and education and shared some of his opinions. He then asked if there were any questions and excused himself. James Cox then introduced our next speakers, two professional lobbyists: Mr. Doug Foxley and Mr. Frank Pignanelli. These two gentlemen infused some humor into their review of the legislative process with us and gave an explanation about how bills get introduced to be voted on. They then introduced our other guest speakers, two of our state Representatives: Representative Brian King, D- Salt Lake City, and Representative Francis Gibson, R- Mapleton. These two men spoke about how important it is for citizens to contact their elected officials about the issues that are important to them; because often times, officials have very limited knowledge about an issue until it is brought to their attention, and they rely on feedback from their constituents in order to make up their minds on how they should vote on the issue. Mr. Gibson answered a few questions at the end, and then they had to go back into the legislative session. Mr. Foxley and Mr. Pignanelli came back up and wrapped up the session with some closing comments and some more question and answer time. Then we broke for a tour of the Capital building and the surrounding campus where Jayson managed to take many more pictures. At noon, we boarded the bus to return to the West Jordan Campus.
All in all, students, staff and faculty felt that this was a worthwhile experience and that we had made a positive impact in favor of Utah’s Career Colleges to our elected political officials.

I was in the middle of my last minute pre-midterm cram session last Tuesday when a voice from the front of the room asked out loud, “Did registration open up yet? I haven’t looked at my portal for a couple of weeks yet.” That opened up the discussion with a couple of the other students who asked about registering through the portal. They had never tried it. End cramming, begin explanation. (I’ll have to settle for a “B”). And just like that, I have 2 more students who will now try registering themselves for spring ‘10, and good timing, because spring registration begins next Tuesday. I would ask, if you haven’t tried it for a while, give it another go. You might just save yourself enough time to bump your test score from a “B” to an “A”.

Monday, our Torts class hosted a very successful Insurance clinic where paralegal students were able to help other students with their questions about car insurance under supervision from an attorney. For those who missed it, they are following it up next week with round two. The clinic will be held next Thursday evening, March 11th from 6:30-8:30pm. Students are encouraged to ask questions or share problems pertaining to auto insurance. The paralegal students will then research those questions, discuss it with the supervising attorney, and provide follow up to provide the information requested.

It brings me tremendous pleasure to be able to post this message. Last Wednesday, we were given the opportunity to raise as much money as possible to support the Red Cross and their humanitarian efforts in Haiti in the wake of devastating earthquakes. Globe Education Network generously offered to match any funds that we could raise by end of day Friday. Here at the West Jordan campus, we managed to pull together an amazing $503.62 in just over 48 hours. This means that our students, faculty and staff are responsible for a donation of more than $1,000 going to help disaster victims. I am in awe at the generosity displayed last week, and I want to thank everyone who participated from the bottom of my heart for all of their support.
