Ask Fishbert: week 6

Dear Fishbert,

I have this article that I got from the library website and I need to use it for my research paper.  My instructor wants it to be in APA format otherwise I will be docked points for having it wrong.  How do I put it in the APA format?

Thanks,

Dear Lost in APA,

If you got it from one of the library’s databases, then it should be a snap.  All you need are 5 key pieces of information: author, date, title of article, title of publication, and database.  Does your article have an author?  Then put the last name first followed by a comma, then the initial of the first name.  Now look for a date, which can be the year and the month. (This goes in parenthesis.)  Remember to put the year first, then the month.  Next up is the title of the article, often found on the top of the first page.  Followed by this is the name of the magazine/journal.  Put this part in italics.  If you have a volume and issue number include that after the title in the following format, 5(2).  Lastly, you need to put the name of the database that you got it from.  For example, Gale Academic OneFile or EBSCOhost Academic Search Premier.  There you have it.  Also, you can follow the example below:

Twain, F. (2009, May).  Fishing made hard.  Fishery Digest, 18(3).  Retrieved from Gale Fishing database.
